A grassroots, community-based wildfire preparedness program that serves as a framework for neighbors to learn about their fire risks and take mitigative actions to protect their families, property and communities.
At the end of the two years participating communities showed that big goals of a focused approach are achievable.
Communities that fully embrace the Firewise principles have successfully protected their homes from the threat of a wildfire.
Due to recent California wildfires insurance costs are rising, and for some areas policy's are being cancelled and no longer available. When this happens the only remaining option is the California Fair Plan, which is expensive and offers less coverage.
The Glendale Fire Department and the California Insurance Commission encourages our participation in active wildfire risk reduction through the Firewise focused approach of preparedness that promotes neighborhood safety.
Most importantly to better protect family and property from the threats of wildfire. This also is an opportunity for you, with a little effort, to do something that may preserve your current insurance and its related cost.
Some insurer's may recognize Firewise certified neighborhoods as having made a meaningful risk reduction, which influences insurability and may even qualify for rate discounts.
Participation is easy all you need to do is tell us about activities you're probably already doing.
To remain certified as a Firewise neighborhood, one volunteer hour per residential dwelling is required and must be tracked. For Whiting Woods, that is ~177 hours per year.
The GOOD NEWS is you're probably already doing something that qualifies as participating, and we just need to know about it . To accomplish this we've developed an online form where you may tell us.
At anytime you may submit volunteer hours as you complete them throughout the year, multiple responses per household are allowed.
Information collected will be completely anonymous when aggregated for the purposes of submitting data to Firewise or in proposals.
